Docent Competition Inspires Potential — Exploring the Colors of Life through Van Gogh's Paintings
Students from Cheng Jheng High School shone brightly in the 16th Quanta Arts Exhibition Award Docent Competition, earning outstanding achievements and bringing new honors to their school.
This year’s competition attracted enthusiastic participation from students across 22 counties and cities in Taiwan, as well as the Taiwan School in Malaysia. A record-breaking 1,641 entries were submitted. The list of finalists, announced today (May 5), includes two students from Cheng Jheng High School, who stood out with their guided presentations of Van Gogh’s The Potato Eaters and The Starry Night, sparking excitement and pride among teachers and students alike.
Student A-Hao guided audiences through The Potato Eaters, leaving a strong impression with his solid explanations and vivid visuals. His natural and fluent emotional expression, combined with a deep passion for art, resonated with the audience. Notably, his use of authentic Taiwanese Hokkien added a local cultural warmth, effectively narrowing the distance between the presenter and the listeners. Judges commented that incorporating interactive elements such as questions and eye contact could further enhance the engagement and presence of his performance.
Another student, Tang-Yuan, presented The Starry Night with a warm and emotionally rich tone, drawing the audience into Van Gogh's emotional world during the painting’s creation. Interpreting the artwork from a personal perspective, he conveyed the deeper meaning behind the imagery, creating a moving connection between art and the human heart. Judges noted that integrating more lively elements in the future could make the presentation even more engaging and vibrant.
Though both students started with no prior experience, under the guidance of dedicated teachers including Peng Jiaolian, Deng Shougang, Wu Yin, and Li Shimin, they gradually discovered their unique voices and rhythms. Through diligent practice in their spare time, they demonstrated a deep love for art and determination to overcome challenges. From unfamiliarity to confidently discussing Van Gogh’s creative context, their progress was truly admirable.
Participating in the competition not only brought the students well-deserved recognition but also highlighted the potential and promise of arts education. Through the practice of guiding, students went beyond knowledge transmission — engaging in deep understanding and heartfelt expression.
Cheng Jheng High School hopes that every student can discover and express themselves through their artistic journey, painting their own colors on the canvas of life.
